ok i want to get one of cheaper tour pack trunks off ebay mainly cause its only gona be on bike a few times a year. question is i want to get a quick detatch rack to mount it on and im not sure what part number ill need to look for from harley so if anyone knows of any body that has mounted one of these or what rack i might need please let me know. going on my 2012 road glide custom.
I also picked up the "cheaper" eBay trunks for my '14 SGS. I don't use it enough to justify the HD model for $1200 base to $2500 with all the bells and whistles. This tour pack came with wrap around backrest, luggage top rack, bag liner & LED lights and only cost me all of $183 shipped. I do have the HD 2-up quick detach rack ($200) and 4 point docking station ($160) & locking detachable latch kit ($70) which set me back another $430. So the hardware cost me far more than twice the cost of the tour pack.
If your like me and need the detachable ability for long trips, or quick trips to grocery store or need to haul stuff around as needed but when not needed pop off quickly then detachable is the way to go. Since your on 2012 road glide you should be able to find good pricing on eBay for a used detachable rack. I actually might have my old one from my 2013 Street Glide. PM me tomorrow and I'll let you know when I check my warehouse.
I would definitely go with the HD 4pt QD docking system, but as said, it'll set you back more than the aftermarket tourpak. The good thing is, once equipped, you can put the tourpak on + off in seconds. Also, if you want a backrest + or luggage rack, snaps right on the same docking hardware. I have the QD tourpak, backrest, + 3X5 flag mount for my RK. Rather than buying a $70 locking kit for each one from HD, I simply lock a 1/2 padlock around the shaft of the pushbutton which prevents it from bein depressed. You can use the same $2 padlock on all three accessories, beats $70 X 3.

That is an excellent idea. Can you show a pic of how you did this setup? I have the tourpack, a luggage rack and a passenger backrest all quick release and used based on how I feel that day and don't want to buy more HD locks if this idea works well. Thanks.
