Well it's been a few years since my 106 upgrade and I'm getting an itch for a few more horses.
I remember asking my dyno guy why he tuned the bike and ran it on the dyno after the 106 build without the air cleaner cover on and I think I remember him saying he could get about 5 more hp by running it on the dyno with the cover off.
I run an S&S teardrop cover. Not the Stealth. The old style tear drop.
So if the above is correct does that mean if I run some other type of "more open" air cleaner that I can get a noticeable (*** measurement) of additional power by simply changing the cover to an open filter type?
You could always run it without the air cleaner and have a built in boring bar. Eventually you could put in bigger pistons. I call BS on this one. Won't make much difference unless it is a stock noise restriction quite breather.
Old hippie and Ke5 thanks...I figured that was too easy to get more power.
Another tuner I called wants to port n polish my S&S heads. Total job $1500 R&R, labor, machining etc. He said that would wake her up a bit more.
That kind of baffles me too because the reason I bought S&S heads were because they are S&S heads! I would have thought that all that stuff was already done to an S&S head.
A different cover or even no cover ain't gonna ya get much, if any, unless ya are over 120 hp or so.
slight exception, some of the S&S teardrops have a velocity stack on the backing plate and a "reverse" horn on the cover to order air into the intake.
helping the air make that 90ş turn into the intake is crucial, on an old Hot Bike intake comparo, they found that a bare carb pulled about 100 CFM, a cupped hand held at the carb throat increased the flow to about 120 CFM.
The stock evo intake was about 138 CFM and the S/E and Ness were about 240 CFM- the last 2 have velocity stacks built into the backing plate
what are you numbers now -- I had my S&S heads worked at Star Racing -- don't know how much they charged -- don't know it you would benefit that much -- I am a huge fan of low compression big motors --

Ya do understand no one is taking evos or carbs, right????
I think you might want to find a different tuner.
If he tuned it with the air cleaner cover off, he is probly chasing numbers.
Your bike should be tuned in the same condition your going to ride it.
