Ok got the bike back. Not baggin on anyone too much but I gotta disagree with a large majority of you who said that it would be quite a bit louder. Uhhh...not so much.
A de-catted head pipe serves two primary functions: 1) it marginally increases the dB level of the pipes, and 2) it lowers the temp at the collector.
Installing a Stage 1 airkit has ZERO impact on the sound of the pipes.
If you want louder pipes, then take a gander at this:
The sound that you say you are searching for from hearing other bikes that sound so good may be coming from a true dual set up. Just something to consider looking in to.
Ok got the bike back. Not baggin on anyone too much but I gotta disagree with a large majority of you who said that it would be quite a bit louder. Uhhh...not so much. I have heard a lot of great sounding HD bikes and then I buy one and it's like..really, that's what it sounds like? So I put on open headpipe, slip ons and open AC and now it's like....really, that's what it sounds like? I'm not lookin for crazy loud but sheesh! I think the V&H monster rounds should be called "Munster Rounds" as in Herman...not scary at all!!
Want great sound...CFR pipes!! The best out there..
Just to clarify..My slip ons are not newly installed, I have 7,500 miles on them. Only the AC and the decatted head pipe are new installations. So are you guys saying that the head pipe and AC need time to "break in" too and that it will get a bit louder after 1K miles or so are on the AC and headpipe?
IMO Monster Rounds are pretty mellow mufflers (good for long haul touring). You have plenty of miles on those slip-ons and they're not going to get any louder without going with true dual headers. Cams would also make them a little louder. You might want to look at something like 4" Jackpots for more low rumble and bark when you get on it. SE FatShotz are another option that you can make as loud or quiet as you like.
