So, with the backrest folded onto the seat when you throw your leg isn't it then under your backside once your on? How do you then get the backrest back up without sliding up on the tank? The HD folds forward as well but this seems not so possible. I'll have to give this a try later on today.

The backrest folds forward to make it easier for your passenger to mount the bike.

Once you throw your leg over the seat and you are still standing up, the backrest easily folds back into its upright position. Get the Mustang seat with the backrest. I love mine!

cool and that looks great. For fun I did try with mine today. But because it's spring loaded it was just an odd and awkward exercise.

I guess it depends on which brand of backrest and seat you have. The Mustang backrest I have doesn't have a spring in it so it lays forward and back without any resistance.

But, for solo rides it's an easy add.

So my first ride with one was quite positive. It really helps keep you planted especially when accelerating from a stop. Also a nice support when flat footing the bike around backwards out of the garage, parking spot etc.
The only caveat so far is that it requires a significantly higher leg lift to clear it when mounting the bike but if you have a bad back very often that comes with limited mobility which creates a bit of a paradox. So right now I am not 100% sure it's for me.
Herein lies the answer to your mounting problem.

Well I took everyone's advice and got myself a mustang vintage solo with backrest. Should be here by Saturday. Thanks for all the advice
