Default Drill bit for removing hinge rivets on tour pak

I did a search and see where someone said they used a 3/16 bit and someone said they used a 11/64 bit to drill out the 16 rivets.

I'm going to go buy a new bit for this project because mine are old....what size do I need? And I don't have a dremmel...I see some say they used one.

When I upgraded my TP hinges, I don't recall what size drill I used. I just used one that seem to fit the need and would drill out the old rivet.
ya just need to chew it up enough to pull the remaining parts out. The new ones will fit the existing hole without modification.
I only used a drill motor.

I believe the instructions tell you what size bit to use. I have done it twice and cant remember for sure what size I used.

[QUOTE=sfcmo357;12790014]I did a search and see where someone said they used a 3/16 bit and someone said they used a 11/64 bit to drill out the 16 rivets.

Both will work only a 1/64 difference!

My suggestion would be to go with a lot larger bit and let the plate behind the rivet that pinches the tourpak be a stop. You simply drill off the head, stop, then push the rivet out by hand. Once all the rivets are out you can re-drill the bolt holes larger as instructed. Much easier!

I would use this advice with caution. My first attempt at this was on my 2010 EGC. Thought I would just drill off the head of the rivet and do as described above. Unfortunately the bit caught after the head was drilled through and sucked the bit into the tour pack lid. Needless to say I had to order a new lid. Because the hole was now way too big. Granted this was probably my fault by pushing too hard. However, it could happen to someone else.

I've seen where many say to re-drill holes for new bolts....but the instructions that are posted don't say to do that. I do gather it may need to be done because I've seen many say they did.

If you can find a dremel to borrow, it'll be a lot easier to get to the ones under the weather seal.
