Are you using 1 or 2 D washers.
First step is to see why it is in a bind. Take the side of the washer/curved part or edge/ slide it between the fp and clevis. If there is some clearance the spring is too tight. I just hit em with a good hammer, won't hurt em, until I get the tension I ant. If it is too thick then pick up a few stainless steel flat washers if too thin put a slight bend in the washer using your vice. This is my cure,
Was only using the one D washer on each side - and both were ridiculously too tight. I did the hammer thing, but to no avail. I like your idea of the stainless steel flat washers. Thanks!
