Default Is this true about startup clank?

I'm new to my 2010 EG Classic with 700 miles on the clock. I'm coming off a '06 SG that was almost bulletproof with 40k on it.
When I start this 2010 I get a bang or clank as it starts, most of the time.
I took it to the dealer for its 1k service since I wanted to get the bike checked out.
When I addressed the clanking issue the mechanic told me all of the newer bikes do it. Not to worry its NORMAL! Of course I'm sceptical since my '06 never did this.
Can those with the newer bikes tell me if this is true or am I headed for trouble with this bike that isn't even broken in yet.

One other thing; on the way to the dealer I heard a ticking noise on the left side while going through the lower gears. I told the mechanic, he checked it out and said my cam chain tensioner was sticking and he said he corrected it. Ticking is gone.

Are you twisting the throttle as you crank? If so, don't. That's the only time I've ever heard a clank while starting.

Replace the stock compensator with a SE compensator and starter clank will be gone. Ask me how I know, did the change out last week and its like I replaced the bottom end.

Bike in neutral and just hitting the starter button, that's it. Even though it's a 2010 it's like a new bike with only 700 miles on it.

Does that mean that my comp is already bad with only 700 miles on it?

First of all it is not normal and the newer models don't or are not supposed to clank on start up. As Vradman points out, the older compensators can be problematic which is the reason for the new design. I agree this this may be your problem and I have read of many failures with low miles.

I he'd a clank after a dyno tune and discovered that the tuner turned off the auto compression release causing the problem. He will never touch my bike again. I'm not sure but I don't believe your model year had auto compression release.

The '10s were the last year with the old style comps. My 08 had the bang from day one and I had no idea what it was. You would be smart to change the comp before it also destroys your starter drive, specifically the sprag clutch in the drive. The sudden shock slowly destroys the inner parts of the clutch. Unfortunately, the newest updated comp kits don't include a new rotor (a flywheel with magnets in it as part of the alternator). Yours has a weak coil spring in it which is really the weak spot of the old comp. The new comp uses Bellville springs (washers with a conical shape) and the new rotor is needed to allow the use of the new springs. Because most of the old comps weren't up to the job, the noise is "normal" on the older machines but it isn't at all something you want to live with.

It's normal for several years after the introduction of the 96" engine. My 07' has done it since day one.

Just for info the cam chain adjuster is on the right side not the left. Maybe the mech meant the primary chain was loose.

I have had it chalk or do a light clank twice on start up, the first time was a month ago
the second time was a week ago. I am not sure what the cause is, but if I hear again I
run it down to the stealership.
