I am about to replace my cam chain tensioners on an 05' RK Classic, EFI. I prefer to work on things myself because then i know it's done correctly. The problem is that i have not done much on my RK yet. I checked the tensioners a week or two ago and they look due at 30,000 miles. I probably should have just continued on with the replacement procedure then, but I put it back together, rode some miles to get it out of my system, and now i have everything back apart. I have been trying to decide whether or not to go with the adjustable pushrods, or just take the rocker boxes off, and take the pushrods out.
Ok, first thing, the front rocker box leaks a little oil around the top. Bad gasket? not torqued properly? I don't know. This is my first go-round with any engine work on my bike. I do have the manual, which at times can be confusing (i'm not really a manual guy) but it's a necessity for some operations. I just have a hard time focusing at times. So, considering i have the small leak/seepage, i am leaning towards that option. Is there much involved? Any secrets?, particular things to be careful of? The advantage is the cost savings obviously. I am leaning towards this option also because i have a serious medical condition which may determine how long I will be riding. So, cost is a big factor.
The adjustable pushrods would be nice in case i do end up doing the cams, but time will determine that. ANy other quick, upgrades while I am in there? Probably the cams would be the best bet but would require the tuner, the pushrods, cams, etc.
cant help but subscribing because I too want to know...
I would think removing the rocker boxes is a big deal otherwise why would so many people opt for the adjustables to avoid taking them off right? interested on the responses.
BTW, what are you replacing with, stock tensioner or Cyco or hydraulic upgrade? Going through rockers is not that hard. Drill rocker supports out while there as well.
Not all that hard through the top, but I notice much more valve train noise after. I still might change the stock pushrods out for adjustables. In the meantime I added another pair of speakers so I don't hear it
I've done several jobs like you're about to do. Every time, it's through the rocker boxes.
It's really not a difficult procedure. If you get stuck, there are plenty of us here that can help you out. Whether or not you do new cams, you've got to remove the pushrods to remove the lifters and finally get the cam support plate removed to access the secondary cam chain tensioner.
