Im seriously considering stepping down a model to suit our riding style a little better. I'm curious though, even though the RK is a touring model, is it easier to handle than a SG? Any former SG owners that went RK? Was it any easier to handle in town than a SG? I know they weigh the same (marginally), but there can be a lot of difference between models. I'd really like to keep my aftermarket stuff, and put on another bike. I can always sell the stuff off. We're considering going with a softail deluxe, but I'd like some informed decisions before I do it.

What's an arak?

And why is it a step down? Smaller or different doesn't make something a step down. It's just different.

What's your riding style? Bar hopping, short jaunts, or long road trips? Solo or 2-up?

I had a Softail, and its a nice bike. But 2-up riding on longer trips, I much more prefer my King. Around town, the King handles very well also.

i actually found it easier riding a road king than riding my softail. That being said, the difference i found between the road king and a street / E glide was the weigh on the front end. I had a road king for about 5 years, then rode a road glide at Sturgis during demo days. The feeling was similar, very little weigh on the front end, plus the added feature of the tunes and a different form of protection from the wind. That was in 06, i've only ridden road glides since then and would not ride any other model.

Not an advertisement for road glides. Its hard to describe, but not feeling the weigh on the front end, actually made the bike feel less heavy, even thou i know they all weigh approx the same within a range of lbs.

my observations

hit up a local dealer for a test ride ! only way to be sure is to ride one because my opinion or the next guys opinion and riding styles will be different thus a different input. my guess with out the extra weight of the fairing it would handle differently. I hate the road glide look but after riding one they are the best handling touring bike period !!

Test rides will tell you a little, but if you can, rent one for a day before you make any decisions. May be the best $150 you will ever spend!

I went from a Road Glide to an Ultra and I will tell you the Road Glide was definitely easier to handle. The frame mounted fairing on a Road Glide makes the bike handle like a dream. But definitely demo one.

A Road King is a step UP, not a step down.

Demo rides are in line for you sir.....different folks, different strokes for sure...I like the way the road king handled, I felt lighter to steer than my EGC but I like the fairing feel...

I knew I'd get a comment like that!

Our riding style is mostly short rides, 30 mins up to 2 hours. A lot of in town riding. I've ridden every model, with the exception of the road glide. I have heard they handle much better on the highway than most models.

I have tomorrow off from work, I think I'll run down to Wichita, KS and annoy the hell out of a salesman!

My best advice (and you don't say what year your SG is) is to get a 2014. The difference in handling between my old 2012 (weird to be thinking of a 2 year old bike as 'old') Limited and my 2014 Limited is night and day.
