When they installed the replacement stock one the first time, it started grinding after like 1000 miles now it's been like 7000 mikes and it never flinches...this comp was a last year install Screaming Eagle...the bike has 84000 miles on it...So we shall see if it comes back....
Well hopefully they fixed the issue but they keep coming out with upgrades so that leaves me to believe that they are guessing. I can't wait for Dark Horse to come out with their compensator.
Seems you didn't get enough info from all the dealers you called. Damn, that's exactly why I have ESP warranty. Good Luck. Make sure you get the latest upgrade.
The first dealer told me of 5 or six prices for parts. I wrote them down at work, but I remember him saying 200.00 plus for the first part. I think the second part was 106.00. There was a 36.00 gasket. There was a 55.00 adhesive kit. Total parts were around 525.00.
I am afraid the second dealer did not figure all the parts correctly. I will check with my indy tomorrow, and if he can't compete, I will confirm with the second dealer that he quoted the SE parts.
Do not think grind is what he is describing. Know on a lot of the older SE compensators, Harley did not get the case hardening deep enough or either the steel was just a sorry grade but when the ramps gaulded, the surface was very rough and I think this would make a grind. Banging usually comes from a weak battery. I have yet to see a posted picture of a truly broken spring on a compensator on here. See a whole lot of gaulded SE ones. Sure are a lot of TIN men at dealers and indes selling the kool aid however. HOW EVER MY COMMENT WAS JUST A SUGGESTION FOR THE FP TO CHECK OUT AND JUST MY OPINION...I'M NO EXPERT.
There are other reasons for the "starter grind" but the most frequent is the spag clutch in the starter drive. When the pieces inside the sprag clutch get beaten so they have flat spots on them instead of being round, they don't adequately grip against each other and that "grinding" is the sprag clutch pieces chattering as they try to get the proper grip. I have no idea how many "warning" chatters you get before it won't even try to grip any more.

Yes me too....it expired at about 78000 miles I think. Had a lot of stuff done to it under ESP....
i wasn't aware that hd had any mileage warranties.....
No,I had a ESP and it happened like 5 days before the date of expiration...when I drove it back home from the dealer I put like 25 miles on it and remember saying when I parked it, well , no more warranty work now...

Seems like Darkhorse is hit and miss on their development also ....
