your posture is more likely the cause. far too often I see people put apes on and then complain about shoulders. Its actually the same principal as weight lifting believe it or not.... next time you ride be concious of keeping your shoulders BACK and DOWN. Its been refered to as putting your shoulders in your back pockets. yea yea... dont knock it till you tried it.

I am extremely stressed with a lot of teen issues; and I'm 69! Adoption things. Besides that, even at my age, I'm a General Contractor, so I'm often loading stuff into my truck and hauling lumber for the guys on the job site.
Anyway, I hit the gym 4-5 times a week and work a lot on my core and upper back. I started when I began having problems with tendonitis in my right wrist and couldn't roll on the throttle.
I last have a backrest and a good seat, and I get off the bile (09 Electra Glide Classic) and stretch/walk every 325 KM (200+ mi) as I head to California to see grandchildren. I also try and do any twisty road I can to keep myself moving - as few I-5 miles as possible!
Get your core and back fit, get a personal trainer if you need to, and the cramps will get better. Maybe a new bed, too.
If he did all that when would he ride? A young woman helps the most...

What other have said. Seems simple and it is - relax! Don't hunch your shoulders but grab the bars and let your arms hang from your shoulders. Rising the bars just makes this easier but can be done with any handlebars. You have to keep reminding yourself not to hunch your shoulders and eventually it will come naturally.

And... also simply the placement of the bars will make a big difference. Loosen the bars and roll them towards yourself or away from you. There WILL be a sweet spot. Just because they are where they are means nothing.

I agree.... get rid of the death grip. Ride with you palms and just allow fingers to drop. They will be in the right spot if you need to get a grip.

Not to say there isn't something else going on internally, but I wonder if you are riding more tensed up than you think.
