Like you I didn't want to get a new bike.
I just installed the Reckless XL fairing, and wish I'd did it years ago.
The tunes are great, can hear well running 80 mph. Though most of my riding is done on two lane back country roads around 60 mph. I ordered with the 6" shield, and replaced it with the 7" Long Range recurve shield. No wind or buffeting on me at any speed. Love it.
I got the Reckless XL with the 8" clear windsheild, 200 watt amp with the infinity marine radio, 4 polk speakers, and 12v accessory recepticle for $1300 bucks and I'm loving it. 70% of my riding is highway. It reduced my helmet buffeting to almost none the only time I get any buffeting is when I'm behind big rigs at highway speeds.
+1 on the ear buds! I keep my IPod inside vest pocket.
Rode through part of a mother of all storms for a few miles yesterday in Daytona. Getting pelted at 70 mph never felt so good!
Never wanted or needed a windshield, faring or anything other than glasses to ride, wouldn't have it any other way!
