The trick is to pull the top nut and then the key off the Jiffy Stand. Drop it down and out. Then you swing the stand all the way forward, easily hook the spring, and swing it back under the bike and back in the mount.. Put the key and nut back on and your finished.
wow. someone who has actually read the manual
i did it the hard way once, popped myself in the nose with the vise grips. then i read the manual and saw the way they said to do it, much easier, no more popping yourself in the nose
Anyone have the part # on that spring for the 07 Ultra Classic. Just picked up another bike Sunday and noticed it was floppy when up all the way, my other 07 was nice and tight. I would hate to be in another accident because of a damn spring.
If you have not maintained or even looked at yours please do so. I read a story here about someone who crashed because his spring broke. After reading I got a few springs and changed out my old one.
Well my new spring lasted 5 months! Thankful I was going around a slow corner and felt something. Looked down to see my jiffy stand hitting the ground. I had a extra spring in my tour pack and changed it out. What turned out to be nothing but a 5 minute delay I hope helps someone who has not checked theirs.
I have found most spring failures are due to loading the bike on a trailer or scraping them on a curb.46k on my 09 spring is still the one installed at the factory.

This is the was I do it, keep a 1/2 wrench in the pouch and your done in no time.
So, I should change my old spring that has lasted 15 years, to a new one that lasts 5 months? Do you own stock in the company that manufactures harley jiffy stand springs?
Hahaha, beat me to it!! Replaced a 7 year old spring for a new 5 month broken one... I'll just stick with my 11 yr old one and deal with it if it ever fails. That said, looking at the mounting point where the spring grabs and look at it for wear is a good idea!
Honda has a rubber bumper/tab on their kick stands that will flip it up if you forget and leave it down while riding.
Can't think of any reason one couldn't do the same with a Harley kick stand. Might even be able to use the Honda rubber itself.
Yeah, there is a reason why that won't work.... Harley doesn't use a kickstand like everyone else... the Harley designed Jiffy Stand is a self locking device that once pressure is put upon it, it locks into a tab on the frame. Kicking back up a-la Honda won't work as it will just lock it into the frame, and a spill will follow shortly.
Agree that if the stand were to get pushed up into the locked position, you're toast trying to ride and turn left. But if the stand got flicked back by the rubber thingie before getting pushed up into the locked position, you'd have a chance. I might explore it a a little with mine some time.
One could go worse, and use that interlock switch like Yamaha does. Where the bike dies if you put it into gear with the kickstand down.
