changed the filter, added some seafoam.

topped the tank off and got it to start. I had to give it some gas to start, but it started and 3-5 seconds it cut off. Tried to start again and it wouldnt. Could it be the oil pump?

There is no 'low oil pressure' equipment that will prevent that bike from running if there is no oil pressure, so I doubt it's the oil pump keeping it from running...

Gotta ask, did the oil light go off while you were riding it home, before it shut down on you?

You also haven't stated if it is carb'd or EFI. Necessary info. Different solutions depending on which. Although, you did mention the fuel pump comes on. That would indicate EFI...

Since the bike was on 'E', I would suspect dirty tank. Fuel filter could be plugged, water could have accumulated, etc. Use flashlight to look inside. If you, or your buddy, feel confident enough, pull the fuel filter/pump assembly. Check for clean filter, and cracked hoses. Many people have a problem with small pin holes in the fuel line, be sure all hoses are in good shape, and replace filter if necessary.

After that, diagnose electrical and fuel delivery system...

Forgot to mention, get a service manual. It will prove it's worth the first time you open it...

the oil light is staying on because there is no oil pressure without the bike running,i would;d start with all fuel related sensors and injectors, the "strong smell" of gas tells me its getting too much fuel. from bad tps to a leaking injector.pull the air cleaner and check the blades i have seen those spin on the shaft.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel..it cranks over...but runs for only a short period.

Remove the air cleaner and spray some starting fluid (ether) into the throttle body while trying to start it. It can only be one of two things, spark or fuel.
