Hello, New to the forums. 04 Road glide.

So i got my buddys 04 road glide. Stock 88 and i believe cams and thunderheader. Also had a PC.

So i went to pick it up and my buddy told me it had sat for a while. good 3-6 months. Said it needed a tune up. SO i changed the plugs with SE plugs and changed the primary and fluid. Started the bike up and it was rough to start. Needed to give it gas and stay on the throttle for it to stay on.

Decided to ride it out and bring it home. 10 mile ride. It was back firing and didnt sound great. Still rode it. 4 blocks from home it died and wouldnt start. Something was making a funny noise, not knocking but sounded like something was loose and bouncing around. Bike had power while it rode.

Got it home and disconnected the PC and the bike started but would turn right off.

When i picked the bike up i added 2 gallons of gas. The bike was on E.

When i changed the plugs they were real black. Super black. Tried starting it again today and it would start then die. Try again and nothing but small amount of smoke. Very minor.

So.... this is where im at.

Find a GOOD local Indy. If you can do so you will never regret it.

Welcome to the forum !

like something was loose and bouncing around
I’d take off the outer primary and inspect. Next I’d look to the tranny.

When i changed the plugs they were real black.
Could indicate a too rich condition, worn valves & seals or piston rings. I’d do a compression test as a first step.

I would not reconnect the PC (unless it has a Stage 1) until you have the problem diagnosed and fixed in order to eliminate it as the problem.

Ad Seafoam or similar to clean the fuel system.

Are there any (DTC) codes displayed?

Unplug the ECM & the throttle control actuator. Are the pins corroded or fretted? If so clean or replace as needed and add dialectic grease.

Definitely needs a good service...especially if bike sat for any length of time. Agree w/Mike on hunting down decent mech..worth their weight in gold. Unless you're in a position to tear into motor, best option for getting back on the road quickly.

Is it a carb. Bike or fuel injection? sounds like flooding, if crab. bike id start with choke **** not fully closed or stuck open or float.

If fuel injection, removing PC might help, but should not be a large issue esp if bike is stock. I would also check for intake leak etc.

Before spent a ton of money

my buddy just stopped by. Tried to start it and it wants to crank over. cuts out before it starts. 1 thing we noticed is the oil light doesnt go away.

Usually the check engine light and oil light will go away then ill start. The oil light stays on and doesnt go away.

If i take it to someone whats a good price to diagnose?

Seafoam in the gas to help clean the fuel system. Some good fresh gas since it sat so long this new ethonal **** is bad for fuel systems. Remove the pc cause it sounds like it extremely rich to begin with. Change fuel filter and last but not least check the injectors. Do some research cause i cant remember what year it was but they had a bad batch of injectors. But id think check injectors anyways cause ethonal is hell on o rings seals and what not. Sounds like its gettin to much fuel to me. If it rode fine before it sat id think its a fuel system issue. What about the fuel pump? Is it priming when you turn on the ignition?

as far as i can remember the fuel pump does come on. A few times when we did try to start it, we got a strong smell of gas. Only when trying to start.

Start with cleaning or replacing your plugs and change the fuel filter, it may have crap growing in there. Also try a injector cleaner or I guess seafoam, Ive never used that but gas that sits turns to varnish and leaves a coating on everything including the filter.
