Of course this question and versions of it have been debated numerous times. Personally I hate a full face helmet but I wear one frequently. When I don't, I know the risks. Some people buy into the whole image of trying to be a "biker", but I am certain that many (myself included at times) just can't stand to isolate themselves from the experience. And no, at least to me, riding with a full face is not nearly as rewarding as without (except at high speeds for a long time, then I am glad to have one on).
As to why you hear these comments, how many are from riders? How many from HD riders? Or do these come from non-riders? I have never bad mouthed anyone's helmet choice (or lack thereof) and can't remember anyone bad mouthing mine (at least not in person, on the internet everyone has an opinion and wants to share it).
If you like a full face - rock it with style. Heck, get a bright green one with a built in Mohawk! If you don't want to wear a helmet that's cool too. Me, I am going to make my choices every day based on what I want, weighing what's right for me the best I can, not based on what someone else believes I should be doing.
I agree.

Opinions don't trump "been there and done it" experience!

I hate helmets. I wear one 99% of the time anyway. I own 1/2, 3/4, and a modular. The Doc says no more sun....thus the modular. I recently retired after 31 years as a LEO. Almost 29 or those years as a Trooper. I live in the Ozarks. Thus I've worked many, many motorcycles accidents and several of them fatalities. I have never went to the emergency room and talked to anybody with a cracked skull......I have interviewed many that were the new owners of a cracked helmet. My experience trumps your opinions.....there are exceptions to every rule. I'm still in favor of choice....... I choose to wear a helmet of some kind 99% or the time and acknowledge the true full face is the best choice.....even though I don't own one. (those guys that race know) FWIW
Everybody will have an opinion, do what you feel comfortable with. The trick is finding a helmet that is comfortable on your head. If it's comfortable you will wear it more.

^This
I have been on my share of motorcycle wrecks, most fatal, some not. What saved the guy under the minivan from having the down pipe burning his face? The helmet wedged between the asphalt and the engine, that's right, melted the front of the helmet, not his face. That being said I still use a half shell.
Fortunately in Colorado, it's simply a matter of choice. I choose which helmet to wear each ride. If I wanted, I could choose not to wear one...but that rarely happens anymore..,so currently my choices are between a 1/2 or 3/4 as my last modular, a cheap Jmax, came apart last the hinge and promptly arrived at the landfill, but I'm starting gto look at news modulars again....simply a matter of choice... ;-)

I don't hate helmets. There's no question that they can save you in some types of crashes. Those who think that's the beginning and the end of the story make it difficult for those who are just as correct about choosing what they need for their ride as I've always done when in a state with a choice. There's always some strong opinion types on both sides. Maybe the guy who said HD riders don't wear ff had someone tell him the no-brainer story, or the what's your head worth story. For the what's your head worth people there's now a solution: studies show if you add 25% more foam (and of course a much larger shell) you'll be a lot safer. How safe is safe?
I'd also rather not ride than use a ff. Tried it for a year; never again, though I certainly understand those using it who have had problems, and those who wrongly argue that they do not turn their head farther.
Hopefully you still have the freedom to choose in your state. If you lose it, it'll be because of the people not knowing how good some rides are without helmets. Next is airbags and reflective armor.

Reason: fixed
In order of adornment:
Underwear, socks, kevlar jeans (leathers when I find some i like), over ankle boots, shirt, leather cafe jacket with spine protection, full fingered gloves, lastly...Modular to protect my beautiful face. All before I even turn the ignition on. Its my own look. Probably belongs on a triumph, but my Vivid Black Road King kicks ***.

Well I know it gets hotter where you are than in the San Jose area where I grew up, but move to the south where I am now and I'll wager you change your look!
