Me and wife has that happened few times we just ride on the shoulder if we get fined which is unlikely cause cop already have more then they can deal with but I much rather pay the fine instead of overheated dead bike and miserable hot (from the heat) wife.
Yeah, they can take a beating and not seize up...what they do is oval out the cylinders and burn the valves...they keep running, but not with the power they had before being that hot.
OP
Check out the Wards Parts Werks fans, they are great for keeping the temps down regardless of how long stuck in traffic.
My box from Wards just arrived today. I bought the grey to match the engine. The detail and finish looks very good. I picked up the 160 degree thermostat as well. I'm looking forward to staying out of the EITMS mode.
EITMS is purely for rider comfort. When it activates and shuts off the rear cylinder, its not because the motor is overheating. Its designed to reduce the heat radiating from the rear cylinder to the rider.
Sometimes, gauges are only good for getting the rider all nervous and paranoid. I've been in the situation where traffic wasn't stopped long enough to shut it down - rolling just enough to keep the EITMS from kicking in, a trooper was driving the shoulder announcing thru his PA to "clear the shoulder" and it was 95+ degrees out. For 45 minutes... no harm done.

I'm betting you're going to like them. On the 13's and earlier it's impossible to go into EITMS with the Wards fans. They work great.
On the 14's, everyone I've seen goes into EITMS when the ambient temp is 80* or higher...regardless of the engine temp. Crazy..only real option is to deactivate it if you don't like the dead cylinder sound/vibration at a stop.
