hang out at your local harley dealer on a good Saturday, chances are you'll be able to hear most brands of pipes. I really love my setup listed below. Price isn't everything if the sound doesn't please you
1/2" X 12" drill bit. Or.....I could sell you a set of Screaming Eagle slip ons from my Street Glide for $100. in good shape.
I'll advise you NOT to drill a hole through the stock mufflers. Most who have done that have been very disappointed with the odd sound that this produces. We used to get good results by doing this to our stock mufflers when we owned Evolution-engined bikes, but the mufflers are vastly different now.
Wait until you can afford a decent pair of slip-ons like Cycle Shack for example. Shop the websites. One member here has purchased a pair of modified, rebaffled stock mufflers on eBay for 125.00 and says he likes them. Hang on to those stockers.....you may need them intact and uncut someday.
Wrong. Drill 'em.
Go ahead....drill 'em! You want a flatulent-sounding muffler? I've heard these drilled mufflers and they sound like a giant that forgot to take his bean-o before a bean dinner. Nobody I know that has done the drill thing has kept them.....nobody.
i actually have vance and hines slip-ons on there now. they sound good on the bottom, but are way to polite. i am coming from a 1200 sporty with drag pipes. i really loved being heard in traffic. i could tell that cars heard me before they saw me. i want that back. plus i suffer from low self esteem, and am convinced that louder pipes will get me laid.
I have Wild Pigs on my bike with stock headers. No, they are not as loud as drag pipes, but I can still hear them pretty well. I agree that true duals are going to get a little more sound, but if it's a buck you want to save, this set-up will do just fine. I bought mine used from a guy off this forum for $100.00. He removed the baffles, took the wrap off and tack welded sheet metal in its place. It has a low, throaty sound now...and I love it!
Also, check out Dennis Kirk. I got a spam from them about pipes on sale...up to 80% off. LA Choppers and some other brand. Both were right at $100.00. I don't know if they are including any pipes for baggers.
Also, I agree...don't drill them. You are going to end up buying new mufflers or pipes anyway, so why not just start out right. I have heard some of those drill jobs and they sound like A$$!!!
Take the Vance and Hines off and replace with Reinhart slip ons you won't be sorry. Sell them here or Ebay them. Try http://www.americanclassicmotors.net/for super deals on the Reinharts; I recently purchased a set of True Duals there and got a great deal.
