On my 2009 flhx, the primary shaft transmission bearing is failing. The plastic cage that holds the ball bearings in place is coming apart and the pieces have caused the seal to leak oil.
There are a lot of small metal pieces on the oil drain plug and a light shining into the oil reservoir reveals a lot of small metal pieces in the fluid.
Probably due to over tighten primary chain due to automatic chain adjuster
I suspect that he's talking about the main drive gear bearing as the inner primary bearing does not have a plastic cage.. If that is the case, it is more than likely the drive belt was too tight not the primary chain.
drive belt tension and primary chain tension can both cause that main gear bearing to fail. I had a conversation with Mark at Baker about the very subject because I was getting a lot of primary noise, the auto tensioner was the culprit, went with a manual adjuster on my 2010 RK. He told me that it can also cause main gear bearing failure.
It is the bearing on the transmission side. I probably did not name it correctly. There are a lot plastic pieces stuck in and around the seal which appears to have caused the seal to leak oil. The bearing looks like 2 rows of ball bearings. Planning to pull out the transmission next
krwould, Thanks for the part number 8967 thread. That is the bearing, it appears to have a plastic cage which is falling apart. I have not removed the bearing yet. I don't think I even want another Harley tranny.
