Default Bag speakers...curious

Sooo. I just bought a 1996 EGC. I am considering a saddlebag speaker setup. What I don't get is this...why can't I just cut a 5.25/6.5/5x7 hole in my lids, install speakers, and run wires.

Am I missing something? Why pay hundreds of dollars for new lids?

Please shed some light on this for me...thank you!

Some guys go the custom route of just cutting holes in the lids and mounting speakers. Nothing wrong with that. I like the Hogtunes lids because they aim the speaker towards the passenger and channels the water away.

If you ride in all weather conditions, I would find a speaker that has a bridged tweeter so you have less of a chance of your bags filling up with water. Also, IIRC, your lids are fiberglass. Don't know what will happen to them structurally when you cut holes in them.

Good luck!

Dude, this is your bike...why risk screwing it up. All it takes is one mistake. Just buy some lids. I went with Hog tune lids but I did have to paint them.

I went with the Harley Boom Audio speakers and lids so that they would match perfectly and have a plug and play installation. However, the Hogtunes kit looks pretty sweet as well.

I've never had a problem with the leaking even when I wash it. I"ve dumped a 1\4 cup of water out of the speakers and never had a leak.

I would be very leary of just cutting holes in the lids. I would imagine you would have to use allot of silicone sealant to keep the water out.
