I have a 2001 electra glide standard , twin cam engine, I just bought this bike about 2 months ago, noticing that my one exhaust pipe had a bluing color which was from the rear cycle. I was told and read here at the HD forums that a lean mixture would cause this. Well today I removed the carb and to my surprise, the idle plug was removed, so I could of adjusted the air/fuel mixture, also I removed the bowl and notice the pilot jet was a 48 and the main a 190. My question is according to all I read that this is what it should be to enrich the fuel to keep it from blueing? But I notice that my intake manifold moves up/down slightly, I checked all four bolts and only one was loose ! My question here is that is the manifold suppose to move up/down slightly? or be solid? Please help with info, thank you.
careful with that idle plug- ram it in too far and you'll pooch the carb.
the brass is stronger than the aluminum
also use some locktite so you don;t loose the needle.
the jet numbers sound about right- it could be that your slide is modified too- or needle, see if you have an N65 needle ( sportster needle)
the idle mixture adjust has very slight affect over 1500 rpms
there are solid mount intake manifolds available- S&S, RAMjet, and Bartels made them and they give a more reliable seal to the heads.
or you can refurb the fittings on yours.
usual testing is spraying carb cleaner or wd40 at the fittings
do not make tuning adjustments based on pipe color...
the rear will always run hotter as it doesn;t get cooling air like the front
Thanks guys, This morning I removed the intake manifold and found nothing but worn out seals, so I picked all three of them up today 12.00 plus taxes, and reinstalled everything. She fired right up and wow, ran completely different!!! I did have to adjust the idle screw, I guess now there are no intake leaks found she was running a little fast, but now she idles so much better and throttles up smooth, just came back from a nice cruise, St. Louis weather today is nice, cool 76*, going back and riding some more. Thank again, I learn so much from this site, and the dealer wanted 200.00 dollars to rejet the carb. apparently one of the past owners had to carb rejeted , but didn't borrow to check the seals at the manifold. The fix was manifold seals. 12.00 bucks and I'm back on the road again. :-)
