As I work on my Ultra Limited I find my current set of torn/star set of tools just do not hold up. They are becoming rounded off and do not provide a good mechanical connection for tightening or loosening and I don't want to round out my fasteners. What is a good brand.. of tools that hold up and won't round off or break.
Bill
I also bought a cheap set of Torx sockets, 1/4 drive...the 27 was rounded off, so I went to Lowes and bought a 27 to try out...I think it's a good tool. I may get the set, it's only 19.99 for a 9 piece set ( I think that's correct number of sockets) anyway, Kobalt makes some very good tools...I've had one of the 20gal air compressors for a few years now, no issues at all with it.
I have a set of Snap-On Torx sockets. I've used them for many years with no degradation of the bits. They're much as they were when new. They cost more upfront than lesser known brands. But they last.
Snap on hands down, no one else comes close. I have 30 mechanics in my shop and they are always breaking torx bits. Everyone except those that are cheap say including myself that snap are way more durable. One thing to bear in mind when a cheap torx or allen is used and the first time they spin in the heads of the bolts, the bolts are compromised and go down hill from there, like a tire wearing from a bad alignment.
Whoever said torx is junk over allen, that is just plain wrong, Its all in using the correct quality tool. If anyone is having issues with stripped or loose fitting bits I strongly recommend using a anti-cam out fluid, it increases grip torque 400%. Miracle fluid for those that wrench for a living.
I use a Kolbalt set from Lowes, lifetime warranty. One breaks or rounds I bring it in and walk out with a new one, hassle free!
Kobalt for me too.
Be sure you use the correct size and get a good bite, lots of folks round out T27 fasteners trying to use a T25 tool. And, do not over tighten. Never understand why some folks over tighten derby fasteners, for example. When they pop like hell to break loose, that is NOT a good indicator, it's senseless.
I went with a set of Kobalt sockets because Lowes is right around the corner, and the Craftsman "tools" are over-priced junk lately. I only have a couple of craftsman tools as I bought them at a garage sale/pawn shop/flea market.
Please use the right tool for the right job, T25 is NOT T27 (Derby cover). Broken bolts are no fun to extract.
