Well I don't think I would give up riding. I would change up the way you evaluate changes to your bike though. Maybe find a nice quiet 2 lane country road in the future.
You are very lucky! You must have nerves of steel. If I had looked back and saw a big a$$ed toothy rim chewing on my bike I probably would have lost it!
Damn! You are one lucky SOB! As others have said, you need to have situational awareness. Transition times in any situation are the times when you need to have heightened awareness. Don't get so wrapped up in checking out new mods, etc that you are that distracted. Glad though that you're ok, hope you have a good supply of underwear.

Hmmmm......that's a shame. Even in Chicago one needs only to head in one direction for an hour to find himself among the corn. Either way, stay focused. Merging onto a freeway is no time to be distracted.
I'm guessing some of you who are calling BS have never seen these:
I drive a big rig for a living and it is very possible that the driver never saw OP. That part of the truck is a huge blind spot for us if we don't have a mirror attached to the hood at that corner. You can also see how the OP may not have seen the big rig in his peripheral vision.
OP admitted himself that he was distracted which could have killed him. If this happened to me, I don't think it would stop me from riding. I have tons of close calls, tho none this severe yet *knock on wood*, but I use it as a learning experience and make sure it never happens again.
I was cruising down the freeway and all of the sudden I felt this scrapping noise to my left. I looked up and saw this big rig merging into my lane. His right front tire eats up my left saddlebag and left saddlebag guard.
Thank god I am still in one piece.
And so I went home and think very hard if I should quit riding. Luck comes only once!!!
Also, I called the drivers insurance to have them replaced the damage parts but they gave me a run around. WTF???
