I just recently purchased an 07 FLHX and I wanted to install a tour pack for the wife. I went to a local swap meet and found/purchased a brand new lid and trunk. Both seem to fit one another but the guy told me they aren't the same years.....could someone tell me the best way to figure out the difference if it even matters? I asked my local HD Service department and they told me I could use the paint number but didn't say where I could find that, also both parts have stickers on them with a year but the HD Service guy said those don't really mean anything but the paint number would tell me the year.....could someone please advise me.....all I have are the shells and I need to purchase all the hardware, etc.....thank you.
The difference will not matter as the shape/fit is the same. Pre 06 was fiberglass and 06 and later is ABS plastic. Just grab the hardware and put it all together and you'll be fine.
I bought all of my hardware with the exception of the 4 point docking kit online and saved a ton of bucks...You'll need a backrest, I got mine on Ebay for $89, 53276-04 mounting kit for $89.95, which is an after market part. I think Harley wants $179.95 for their's. The 4 point docking kit is the HD 53804-06 and that's about it. Look for these on ebay and you'll save a bunch.
As for the color, Harley won't tell you what the color number is, all you need to do is go online and google 2007 Street Glide or FLHX Colors and look for your color name and not number. Then go find a paint shop who will paint it for you and find out how much paint you'll need to paint the whole thing and buy what you need.
Thanks for the reply, even though my bike is a 2007, the sticker on the lid says 2012 and the trunk sticker says 2013.....both parts like my bike are in Vivid Black. I was told by a friend that I should take it into the local dealership to have the hinges and latches riveted on because they have a special gun to do it with.
Anyway, they are the ones that told me the years written on the stickers didn't mean those were the year of the part and that they would have to run the paint numbers to verify the year......where's the paint number located at to tell that?.....or are they just messing with me or maybe the guy behind the counter knows less than me, if that's even possible.....lol
That's the thing about paint numbers, the harley paint shop won't give you their internal paint number. They'll only refer to it as a paint name. If it's black, they refer to it as vivid black. What color do you want to paint it?
Let's see if I understand. You have a Vivid Black bike. You have a vivid black tourpak and lid. As long as pre 2014 you are fine. Doesn't matter what year regarding the color.. If you were to order a vivid black tourpak from HD today for your 07, they will paint it vivid black .... Not 07 vivid black. Just get the mounting kit, backrest, hinges and latches and a service manual and put it together. If you were to say " I have a red bike and red tourpak and red lid then we need to discus year because HD has had about 132 different reds in the last 15 years
