wait until you are 800 miles from home and the thing breaks...
the gas station was closing...I filled some pop bottles with gas while I worked on the lid
I was able to shape a brass feeler gauge to slip in and release the catch.
the linkage on those uses crappy little rivets that can break, they also use brass pins which can vibrate out.
