Default belt check

Ok I have the service manual for my 13 sg. It has the belt tension in the front as 5/16 to 1/4 and another section 7/16 to 1/4. Which is right? Do I check belt tension with the back wheel off the ground? what is the proper way? book is useless sometimes. Thanks

The thing those dimensions have in common is 1/4". Personally I always set mine (earlier model) at the generous end, so around 5/16" fits both options. It will be interesting to see what an actual owner does!

Wow, I'm impressed you guys can get this belt tension adjusted to 1/16 of an inch. Better than I can do.

Do I check it on jiffy stand or with rear wheel off the ground? What's the proper way.

By the belt tension gauge at about halfway I'm getting about 1/2" to 10lbs. That's on the jiffy stand. It would be different with the rear wheel off the ground, right....What size is the axle nut to get it loose?

The procedure and tension spec may vary by year and model...

for instance on my Evos the spec is about 9/16 @ 10 pounds with the riders weight on the bike on jiffy stand ( so you lay over the seat and poke with your hand at the belt).

Your year and model will have another procedure and spec that works best for your bike

I just feel mine from time to time

I've owned belt drive Harleys for over 20 years and always done them parked on the jiffy. I've also always used the factory gauge.
