well, I disassembled the rear master cylinder and calipers, cleaned everything, polished the pistons, installed rebuild kits and reassembled everything - no change.
I pulled the line off the caliper and press the brake pedal (stood on it, really) - almost no fluid came out. Pulled the line off the caliper, fluid flowed freely and the pedal moved easily.
This tells me the problem is:
# crap in the line somewhere
# pinched line (will check shortly -seems unlikely as a good part of the line is metal, not hose)
# ABS module
Ghostrider45- Do you have ABS brakes? If so they are computer controlled & any work done to them has to have the computer engaged, yes that includes bleeding. The tech has to hook up a ABS computer control instrument to get the valves to open & close, unless the computer control is overridden you can pump till the cows come home with neg. results. The ABS unit is under the right side cover. Such is the price of technology.

yes they are ABS. I did research this before I touched anything - my understanding was that I could bleed the brakes if it was a simple fluid replacement. If anything was disconnected, then 'final' bleeding would have to be done by the dealer with the Digital Technician, but even without that the brakes should at least function.
The brakes were locked up before I touched anything, so its starting to look like the real problem lies in the ABS modulator (48343-09, $369) or the ABS controller (40649-08, $477).

The above quote is confusing. Did fluid flow easily once the line was removed from the caliper? If it did I would say the blockage is in the caliper.

oops. typo. Fluid came out when I disconnected the line from the master cylinder. No fluid at the caliper.
I repeated the test at the ABS modulator - fluid come out of the line from the master cylinder into the modulator, but not out of it, so fluid isn't even getting to the rear caliper.
Went to the dealer & picked up a new ABS modulator and will swap that out tomorrow.
I replaced the ABS modulator (48343-09, $369)and that fixed the problem. Bled the brakes (front & back) and everything is functional. Will take it to the dealer for the 'final' bleed with the digital technician next week.
