I have a 2013 FLHTK that has 10500 on it. Since I bought the bike the motor ate oil. It does not leak it, it burns it. At 7500, finally got the local dealer to look at it and do leak down and compression test. Both cylinders failed compression tests. (Dealer said they were both cylinders were borderline but Harley replaced both jugs. Statement given to me at the time was rings did not seal and that the cylinder walls were bad) Anyways both jugs and rings and heads replaced and they did the break in. Checked oil constantly and it burned none for almost 2000 miles. Last thousand started to again burn oil at a greater rate as the miles rose. Now it is back at the dealer and the back jug has failed the compression test again.
So the dealer tech says he has had a couple of these where the rings did not seal but never had it happen on the same bike again. (Or the bike owner does not know yet) Tech says they do not know why they have a couple do it. I assume Harley knows why....
So anyone else out there having this issue, and if so what was said and done?
Ok, Mechanics out there.... I am listening.
I am really concerned my warranty has a month left on it and I am seriously considering trading it before I lose my butt on it....
a guy who races cars one posted this & it make a-lot of sense.
a car/bike is broke in the first 20 miles.
what you want to do is go to a lonely 4 lane hwy.
warm the bike up thoughly.
so from 20 mph to 60 mph at nearly full throttle.
then let off of the gas & let the bike de-accelerate to 20 mph ( no brakeing)
do this several times.10-15
go about 45 mph to let the bike cool off
shut it off. & overnight cool.
i have a hi-cap box fan on the rt side by the eng in my garage. with a 10 min
timer. when i pull in the garage i rotate the timer to on & let it blow air across the heads for 10 min. & it shuts its-self off. yea if i dont ride one day it goes on anyway till i go turm the timer to off. good luck
doeing this thrust the rings against the cylinder walls, thus a good break-in.
My 2012 Street Glide did it. Was burning over 1 qt of oil in 1000. HD excepts 1 1/2 qt in 1500 miles. Bike rattled VERY bad on cold start up and left black chunky burned oil on the back of the bags. No smoke and no leaks.
This is what was done to the bike: 21963-07 Piston and Rig kit .005 OS, Gasket Kit/Top End 17052-99C, OE Cylinders Bored .005 OS.
The bike has had almost 4000 miles on since the work was FINALLY done and all is well at this point.
You can read about my troubles here if you care too. On a side note the owner of my dealership stepped up big time and gave me a 3 year extended warranty for my troubles.
As long as it's an ongoing problem and you and the dealer you're going to have it documented as such, there should be no problems concerning your warranty coverage and repair after it "runs-out". They shouldn't have any qualms about the repair it until it's corrected.
I have had Harley be really good about fixing things and then a couple of years ago it took a very bad a$$ lawyer to get Harley to do what they are suppose to do. Tends to make me not to believe everything Harley says....
craigffb,
I am looking up your thread to. I do not have any oil residue at all. I am thinking of a taking it to a builder that I know and have him just it up right and fast but I would like to know whats going on.

This is what I was told also.

There was no way I was gonna pay to get a bike fixed that was under warranty. Just wasn't gonna happen.
Could this issue possibly be coming from bad crankshaft run out? You might want to consider asking that question considering the top end has been rebuilt twice. There has to be an underlying issue that should be figured out before doin it again.

There would be oil migration if that was the case. I'd guess that was one of the first things they checked. I know they did on mine.
