Default Fairing mounted Oil temp guage

Has anyone installed the HD oil temp gauge in their 07 yet? I purchased the gauge from the dealership the other day and after reading the install instructions for the sending unit, I realized they were for an 88 motor - and do not apply at all to the 96. Since I also have the HD oil cooler, I can easily install the sending unit at input to the cooler but am wondering if anyone has found the right spot for the sending unit install on the 96.
Any help is apprecieated.
Thanks

Yep, cut the top line to the oil cooler exactly 2.12" from the cooler end and splice in, or an easier install is to put it in the oil pan under the engine.

You have to be a sadist, not to mention a contortionist to put it in the line ( I speak from experience unfortunately)

Mine is installed like described, only in the return path of the oil cooler. It was installed that way by the dealer. Word of warning though. The gauge will read minimum scale until the engine oil reaches approximately 180 degF. The thermostat in the oil cooler adapter, which is installed where the oil filter screws in does not kick in until 180 degF. My bike reads 110 degF all the time. The oil is hotter than that, but since it is less that 180 degF, there is no oil going through the oil cooler. If I get stuck in traffic for any period of time it starts to register, but during normal riding it does not.

However, it is still relatively cool here in high 70s. When it reaches the 90s I will see if the oil cooler is needed. Especially in trafficjams. I don't care if it does not register, that means the oil is not too hot. It is the high end that I worry about. Eventually, I will move it to the oil pan so I can get realistic readings.

Many thanks Dalton - I assume the oil pan has a place to insert the sender? I can't look right now since the bike is down the road a few miles :-(.

BTW - nice looking ride - looks like you also changed out the wheels - I did the same with my ultra classic- went to 60 spoke chrome with Avon Venom-X tires, chrome forks, lowering kit. I ride a lot and take some pretty long trips so I am a littled worried about having tube tires - but might give theat green slime a try if necessary.

thanks again

There is a much simpler install for the oil temp sending unit. Look right next to your oil drain plug and there is another one which is not magnetized just an inch or two to the left. Go to an auto parts store and get a brass 1/2" male pipe to 3/8" bushing (I think the sending unit is 3/8"). Run the wire for the sending unit up one of the front downtubes, grounding at a place of your choice. Install the gauge in place of the useless POS air temp gauge using the same power supply.

Simple, accurate temp readings. The instructions for the temp gauge are simply not the best place to install the sender for accurate oil temps...the sump is.

Having the dealer install this, where will he likely put the sender?

On mine, part #26155-07, the sender is 1/8" PT--so I bought a 1/8F-3/8M adapter from Napa. Instead of running the wire up the downtube, I ran it under the tank, a more difficult proposition but neater. This way you don't see the wire. The sender was grounded at the grounding screws under the seat just forward of the battery.

I agree the pan is the best place to read the oil temp, as this is the industry standard. Every car I've owned in the past 20 years has had an oil-temp gauge, installed by me, and the sender always went in the pan as a drain-plug replacement. I'm accustomed to readings there and wouldn't have it any other way, knowing full well the oil is perhaps 20° hotter in the heads.

My dealership wanted to charge me four hours labor to install the oil temp. guage. Geeezzeee....$280.00 for the install is simply a waste of money.
