Question 1989 Electroglyde

My hog has a loose shift lever on the shift shaft. It's time to replace the lever or the shaft but I don't have the right service information to remove either. Alls I have is the 1984 - 1990 FLT/FXR models Service Manual which does not mention the shift shaft. Is there another manual I can buy to repair my Hog? I love working on my Hog. Any ideas?

the foot lever or the lever that attaches at the tranny to the inside of the inner primary case?

check the shifter pawl specs as in 7.3 in your manual

check figure 7.26...

and on pages 7.18 and 7.19 there are sections about setting up the shifter at the tranny end

and for an EVO, there is a evo part of the forums- the guys there fix stuff...and are smart.

most owners on this board have late models and are trying to figure out how to add more "Live to Ride" trim to their bikes.

Mike, Thank you, I have checked 7.3, but my problem is that the shifter arm is loose on the shifter shaft. THe bolt is tight and the lever is still loose on the shaft. I believe I have to move the shaft a little to replace the lever.

Mike, i'll try EVO. Sounds like I need more help. I have automotive transmission experience and when I work on one, there is a manual which leads Techs. through the unknown. I was hoping there might be one for my Harley.

It is hard for me to garner the information you're trying to relay...

Is it the shifter lever that you use to shift gears, i.e., the one by the footboard, or the inboard lever?

These are all made of pot metal, and typically the spline shaft will outlast them.

A picture would be helpful.

Chip, now your getting closer. I bought the lever from Harley, but when I loosened it to remove it, the lever won't clear from the case. It looks like I have to move the shaft a little.

You very likely will have to pull the inner primary.
I would recommend buying a manual specific to your year and model.

first try a grade 8 bolt and tighten the snot out of it(if its already worn u got nothing to loose) if its been loose for a while the knurl is worn,u may have to replace the shaft as well. there is another option that will save from pulling the primary BETTERLEVR.COM.
