Default 2012 Trike Stage 1

Looking to do the Stage 1 to my 2012 trike. i have heard of people doing it by themselves but my questions are

1) what parts is in the stage 1. I know breather, slip on mufflers, what else?
2) can it be done by yourself
3) if yes to #2 does it void warranty?

Thanks

1) Tuner

Check this LINK for an overview of what makes up various Stage I upgrades, Not all Stage I's are the same.

2) Yes, anything from a budget Stage I to a Performance Plus Stage I can be done in a typical home garage (or driveway).

3) Technically a Stage I could void a portion of the warranty...if the problem was caused by one of the Stage I components. That being said, I have never heard of a dealer voiding any portion of a warranty due to a Stage I upgrade.

Technically Stage 1 is just the installation of a free flowing air cleaner setup with a download, this is according to Harley Davidson. Now most dealers would like to convince you the mufflers need replaced also, this is and isn't true. You'll get a slight performance improvement with the air cleaner change and the download. You'll get a better boost with the selection of a good performing muffler and tuning or having it tuned with an aftermarket tuning device.

As DK mentioned, its rare a warranty will be void. But it is a possibility with the addition of an aftermarket tuning device, a whole lot of this all depends on your dealer or any dealer you would have service work performed at.

Got it Thanks again. So what about slip-on? What is a good choice?

There are so many choices. What makes a "good" choice for one person may make it a "bad" choice for another.

As mentioned in the overview I linked in my previous message, there are three main factors when deciding exhaust (slip-ons).

Looks
Sound
Performance

Looks are completely subjective, you have to see what strikes your fancy

Sound is also subjective...loud to one person is quiet to another. Some like deep and mellow, other loud, but deep, other loud and harsh.

I suggest you listen to many different exhausts and decide what you like sound wise.

Performance is more objective.

Here is a LINK to some very nice looking slip-ons, that are moderately louder than stock, and have good performance.

I personally like deep and on the loud side, but it's got to have great performance also.

The following video shows how you can make that happen with your stock exhaust. The nice thing is that this mod, if you like the looks and sound, is also one of the best performing slip-ons you can run.

If you are wanting something not as loud, the E-Series Slip-ons are top performers. (too quiet for me, but tons of people like the look and sound)

See them HERE

So much depends on what type of sound you're looking for and whether you're going to stick with the catalytic converter in the head pipe, or remove the cat or go to a different head pipe. Some of the top tuners have been getting good results with the Kuryakyn Crusher series, the mellows make good torque without a lot of racket. If you want a tune able muffler, a disk muffler is hard to beat. Both Supertrapp and Fuelmoto have disk muffler offerings. Exhaust choice is such a personal thing, one man's pleasure is another man's turd.
