I have a 2006 Ultra Classic with a trike kit and the original 88 engine. I've added S&S 551 cams and cam chest. I been thinking about adding a 98 inch cylinder kit from S&S but cam across a set of jugs and pistons from a 2008 Fat boy I picked up for $75. The engine was supposed to have 15k miles on it and the cylinder walls still show a cross hatch. Any reason Ican't use these? Considerably cheaper that S&S route.
I am not sure if they are same or not. You could bore yours. I did nikal sil 98" on bike, and then rebuilt it 50k later by boring my stock.. I would not do nikal sil again, to expensive to re sleeve. I'll just bore .010 over next time. IMO 95, cammed, ported is a great way to go. Faster than lots of bike EPA engines.
the 96" and 88" should be the same bore. The got 96" by stroking the 88". So only thing you gain by buying them, is you can ride your bike, while they are being bored.
When you look at S&S site how do they sell the jugs? Are they good for 99-??

If I was looking to upgrade my Trike, I would contact Fuel Moto and ask what the best route would be with the cams you now have or maybe a cylinder kit with cams set up.
When I had my '00 UC T/C 88 I upgraded the 5-sp upgraded with a Baker 6-spd and immediately realized that I needed more "umph" to push the bike especially when riding up hills and mountains and pulling my little cargo trailer.
I had the 95 Big Bore Kit installed and it literally made that bike feel hundreds of pounds lighter!
Later on I had the S/E Hydraulic lifter/cam kit with a H.O. oil pump installed.
When I sold the bike (at 77,000 miles) the guy that bought it converted it from the MM F.I to a S/S and polished the heads and it was dyno-ing numbers close to my tuned S/E 110.
I like the 5 speed for low RPM power. Not shifting as much, I was not as happy with the 07 speed as I thought I would be. Rode 100 miles at 100mph with 5 speed. I like the 5 speed when on group rides. If you have extra weight, I am not sure you would want 6 speed.
Since I have the jugs from the 96 inch, my thinking is to take the advice offered and get them bored out to 95inches. I've seen reference to the positives of the short stroke 95 inch engine and I can do this a bit at a time and do the entire rebuild over the next winter. May also look into raising the compression ratio up a bit since I'll be replacing the pistons.
Unless you go with an over drive the final gearing is not that much different 5 or 6 speed. 6 speed just gives you another step in getting it moving.
Yes in some years the final drive varied a little. In the 07's some complained about the final ratio . They were not use to the TC96 and 6 speed. So HD caved and change the final a little in 08.
