Default Help with V-Rod decision ...

I just bought my first Harley in October (Super Glide) and I like it a lot. My girlfriend and I stoppedby a dealer yesterday to do a little Christmas shopping (and for me to just hang around a bike shop for a few minutes in this crappy weather). Next thing I know, the personable salesman is walking me into the shop, and there it was -- '08 Night Rod Special in denim, and I'm looking at it fromthe rear. That beautiful fat tire, black engine, black pipes, black wheels.

He told me this one was sold, but he invited me to swing a leg over it. Fit like it was made for me. Then he says it's on hold, but not sold and I could probably have it if I wanted it now.

So, I need some information. Do these sell for msrp, are they marked up, or discounted? Are they in short supply, or can I just wait for spring when I'd be in a better position financially to do this. I'm afraid of the beating I could take trading in my SG, but it's an '07 and I got a pretty good discount when I bought it (still bone-stock).

Any information is appreciated, specifically about the pricing of the Special, and experiences you've had trading in late-model H-Ds for new ones.

Thanks ...

I would not expect to get much of a discount on a Night Rod Special. I got mine for MSRP. There just one of the tougher bikes to find. Some dealers seem to get them regularly and some cant. I love mine, I got lucky and happened to stumble across mine the same day the dealer recieved it. I know others who have been waiting months to get one.
If you want it, I would jump on it while they have it.

It's MSRP or more.

You could wait and it (or another) might be there or you could not find another. It's a tough choice but I would never recommend to anyone to jump on something just because it was around when it might put you in a financial jam. If you can swing it, go for it. If you can't, don't, there will be something else that comes along.

I agree with eazy.Buying on impulsenormally ends up like marrying the wrong woman. It can be a painful and costly experience. However, there is nothing stopping you from at least running the numbers with the stealer and see if there is any beating at all on the SG. In other words, at least gether in the sack.

I always buy used as I find pulling any new vehicle off a stealer lot is a loss the moment it happens...at least 30%. However, it's gotta be the right vehicle as no or limited warranty's are killer if you geta bad egg. I do find that my patience and research wins in this area every time.

Just my $.02.

Settle down and back off. Worse thing a person can do is fall in love with a bike at a dealership. You have a bike that you love and that other one will be around next year, and you can probably pick one up from a private party $5K less.

Your experience trading in a late model H-D for the Night Rod Special is very regional, if not dealer by dealer. It is very possible you could come out OK given the fine stock condition of your Super Glide, bought at a discount. Run it by the dealer to see what they say. Can note the VRSCDX is a very special bike.

I just traded my 07 FXDL in for an 08 NightRod Special. Couldn't be happier.

Paid 14,200 for my FXDL new... sold it back to them three months and 5k miles later for 15k, and picked up the VRSCDX for about 500 below MSRP.

I'm a happy camper

Thankseveryone -- good input. Yeah, it's impulsive, but if I can make it work I'm going to do it. Otherwise, I'll enjoy my SG for a while -- it's still not fully broken in yet -- and I'll be back here next year.

Herr Monk, where are you buying? Here in NY, two dealers I checked are marking them up at least $1000, and are offering me quite a bit less than what I paid for my SG. If I couldget abetter dealon the trade and get a VRSCDX for close to msrp, then it's a no-brainer.
