Default Gas gage

Who's got the low down on the 2008 vrscaw gas gage sending unit? Mine is not reliable, and Harley says it should work fine, but the H D dealer Tech. says not and never has. I've heard it reads by sonic waves. Has anybody looked into it? Does anyone know if Harleyis trying to find a fix? or were I can complain to H.D. about it. If it's true they don't work we owners should flood Harley with request to get a fix. I've also heard from some of you that these bikes are bullet proof but mines back at the shop for 1000 mile service andalso it developeda miss that killed power (Speedo dies to)for just a second then it comes back on.I'm hoping this is the last visit to the for awaile. I've had the bike Two months and it's been in the shop 3 times. Still thinkit's a bad *** bike though, and one way or the other it's going to be reliable. I'm getting a lot of flack from the Ikea riders though.

The speedo dying sounds like a loose ground. As for the fuel gauge, who knows. I still think that the unit thinks there is only 3 gals in the tank based on the original 3.7 and divides the gauge in thirds. I don't know if it needs either a larger or lesser resitor on the gauge for adjustment, but some enterprising person could fix it, I'm sure.

Many of the new bike have the same problem. HD changed the sender since the old one didn't work, but the new one $ucks as well. I heard from a memeber on 1130cc.com that he had the updated sender installed in his bike, but I don't know if it fixed the problem or not. Most people don't bother using the gas gauge. I removed mine three years ago and just go by my odometer. It makes life much easier.

Try this. It took me two tanks of gas before it stabilized, but since then my 08 gauge is rock solid.

When you hit the run switch, don't just wait for the fuel pump to stop, keep waiting until the gauge registers. It seems that the gauge needs a few seconds to get an initial reading, and if you interrupt it (with an engine start) all hell breaks loose sometimes.

After I went to this procedure, all is well - except that it still registers E with zero miles remaining with a gallon left - other than that very consistent.

It reminds me of a false sonar echo. Wonder if it has something to do with the shape of the tank and the gas sloshing around inside?

You know the answers I got back on this forumwere right on so far, Thanks, I'll try waiting until the gas gage is stable before hitting the starter.Harley is putting in a new sender or pickup, not sure which, but I'll go your route also. The dealer is still looking at the miss but suspect a RPM control module. I guess it contols a lot of things like speedo, rev limiter, ignition timming, fuel injection? You know Harley has so much invested in the V ROD that I'm sure they want all the owners to love this bike. Anyway the dealer in town is talking with the mother plant so I'll let ya know what they say or find out.

Mine sucks. I'm in the red with two gallons left at least. Light comes on at over a gollon left. And half the time when I start her up, the needle stays at full and I have to restart it to get any feedback.

My gas guage is erratic.

When new and it said Lo I rode another 20 miles thinking it was going to quit at any moment. Go to fill it up and find I still had a gallon or so left in the 5-gallon R tank.

Sometimes it stays on E when I turn the ignition switchon and stays there. Turning it off and back on doesn't change anything. It starts fine and eventually over 10-20 miles or so will slowly rise to where it ought to be.

Recently, it did a slow descent to E from 1/4 over the course of just 5 miles and then started to rise back up.

I get about 190 miles out of tank so I just go by the odometer like I have on every other HD I've owned - even the 2000 RoadKing which had a guage in the cap.

Of course, I'd feel better if I had a true reserve I could switch to just in case I messed up.
