i road from norfolk, va to erie, pa and back in a week end... road from norfolk, va to chatsworth, ga and back in a weekend... all stock no mods... only my hands bothered me because of no cruise control...

hey kid I'm complaining about the stock bars. they are too narrow an angled for me. I'm looking at drag bars with the same height raiser an diameter so the speedo clam will fit.
I love the v-rod. Engineering marvel at the very least. I wish they would put that motor in a dyna.
I have a street bob. It's under-powered stock,so I put in tw6-6 cams,106 kit,ported and shaved heads. Bike is much better now but still isn't a v-rod.
The street bob needs a seat right off the bat,mustang seats are awesome,a 4" riser makes the ride easier on my back. With a bitch bar it's easy to get bags to attach.
The v-rod,for me would need taller bars and new seat,mid controls and highway pegs plus whatever for storage for longer trips.
I don't think you will be disappointed with either bike.
Personally I don't like shared sumps,I prefer a specific fluid to do a specific job but it doesn't seem to affect the longevity of the v-rods.

I totally agree that the V-Rod is an engineering marvel.
The more people I ask about longer travel, the more the Dyna name comes up, other than the touring bikes.
I ride a 2007 vsrcd now days and it has mids with factory highway pegs,I can do a easy 450 a day and want to go more.Im sure some of the reason behind this is that, i used to put 300 - 400 miles on my lowered,shaved seat fxsti on monthly rides with my riding buddies, .I would be pretty beat up afterwards though.Im in prefect working order after a full day on the vrod.I owned a dyna street bob too .I personal loved it,but i have never enjoyed riding like i do on my vrod.

You know, every V-Rod owner I've met said they never regret owning it. There are some mods needed of coarse, mostly for comfort so I can see.
Most HD owners I know never regret owning a HD either.
Once I've owned an old Shovel. I really like the FatBob and the FatBoy.
The more I study and look at the V-Rod, the more I like it.
thing is those who have problem for the most part are the one who mod the crap out of it. example: oil filter blew off my peice of shyte HD vrod... i don't understand it should be able to handle 15lbs boost from my turbo and the huge amount of fuel i dump into the cilynders and my gas milage sucks, i am going through tire like mad, i blew a head gasket last week and before that i had to rebuild my transmission after only 50 passes on the 1/4 mile track(in which i got beat by a dam near stock busa)... this why my bike is still mechaniclly stock... just some cosmetics(black stuff)... 35,000 mile of my driving and i finally broke something in the tranny but it got fixed aby me and some friends and i am ready for another 40,000 thousand.
If you plan on doing 300 mile trips non-stop, you'd better upgrade to a larger fuel tank!
Seriously tho, with my stock seat and bars, I would regularly ride 200-300 miles a day. Last season I rode from southern CT to Mt. Washington, NH stopping only for gas every 120 miles or so. As long as I shift positions and stretch out at the stops, it was fine.
Over the winter, I opted to go with 10" Z Bars for a more upright riding position. My chief complaint with the stock bars was a kink in my left shoulder and bad elbow issues from time to time. Seat is still stock and fine with me. Bunch of pics if you click my sig below...
