Hello HD Forums!!
Nice to make acquaintances of you all. I am a new owner, and currently underway on a complete rebuild of my '81 FLH Classic. Joined up here to get some much needed advice on my rebuild. As well as to network with some likeminded individuals that ride.
About me; I work nights as a Barback so I'm usually reachable around 3:30PST into the early morning. I'm comfortable with a wrench in my hand but have not had the pleasure of wrenching on a bike before (thus the aforementioned advice I'm seeking) VERY MUCH looking forward to it however.
About my bike; '81 FLH Classic, factory paint and decals. Some sun damage on the front fender paint but looks damn clean. Was given to my uncle by an old friend. His truck is dying and he sold it to me to buy a car. She's been sitting in this old friends garage for the better part of a decade, needing only some minor electrical work and few oil lines replaced.
Why I'm completely rebuilding; Started inspecting her and discovered that the primary chain oil line was rotted and fell apart as I touched it. Research alerted me to the fact that the primary case needed removed to replace it, as such I've decided that tearing that much apart (and finding many a rusty or missing fitting, they all must go! Every knut and bolt will be replaced) I may as well give her some much needed TLC. Of course $$$ is a factor so I am beginning with a methodic teardown. Removing one component @ a time and cleaning parts, polishing trim pieces, lovingly wrapping them in heavy paper and cataloging them to wait as I purchase the needed parts, tools etc for the rebuild. Gonna do it right the first time in and though I severely want to be riding I am not going to rush through it.
Apologies for the long-winded introduction, eager to hear from you all and hopefully attain enough experience to contribute to the forum myself one day.
