i just got back from about 7000 miles from carbondale, il and back to oklahoma city where i've been waiting out the rain for the past week. i learned some things during my trip. stay off of i-10 between la and el paso as much as possible. i went that way because i never had, but there is nothing to see except dust devils and heat mirages. and it runs a lot more southerly than it appears on the map to tucson. if you are on i-10, don't stop at blythe, ca. it only exists to steal from travelers. it is just a couple of miles to the ariz st line and gas was 40 cents a gallon cheaper at both exit 1 and 16. also mcdonalds has no mechanism to keep franchice holders from ripping travelers off. for example i ordered fench fries and a fountain diet coke at mcdonalds in blythe and was charged 4.50 with no refills. in holbrooke, az i was charged 8.70 for a big breakfast. the best place to eat, especially if you are going to be on the road all day is at dennys. the grand slam breakfasts will keep you from being hungry all day and with coffee and a 2.00 tip is still under 10.00. us 70 and ufrom las cruses to amarillo, tx is an alternative to getting off of i-10 but is pretty brutal also except thru the mescallaro apache land which is very scenic and runs from telarosa, mn to around 30 miles from roswell, nm. from there on to amarillo, the only break from the heat is the smell of pig farms after you get on us 60 at clovis, nm. also i found that most of the time you can find a motel nearly as cheap as a camp ground. stop at smaller towns and look in the yellow pages. most towns on the interstates with populations of 10000 have four or five motels and usually you can get one for around 25.00, about what a camp site costs if it has shower facilities. and another bit of advice is to be careful what you wish for. i had always wanted to drive the pacific coast hwy-ca 1. but unless you have nerves of steel which being 62, i do not, 1 from monterey to hearst castle may not be for you. it is cold and windy of the hard gusting variety with dirt pull offs no more than 20 ft from 1000 ft drops with very narrow roads and most of your lane being taken up by cars swinging too wide around the endless- for 74 miles- curves. places like mocassin, ca and on the way to muir beach north of san francisco run for about 10 to 20 miles and are fun. monterey to san simeon wasn't, at least for me. i went to taos, mn, petrafied(sp?) forest, grand canyon, sedona, az, yosemite, monterey,ca, san francisco, venice beach, and other places along that rte. if any would like to know about something in these areas i might be able to help. dogassokie

Pretty cool "from the road story"...just that your first line of the story leaves me with questions. 7000 miles? From where to where?
