I've ridden bikes for a long time, until a couple years ago, had a 2001 Goldwing, crisis hit the family sold it, and downsized momentarily to a VTX1300. Now some things are looking better. I'll be coming into some cash (around $10K) in October of this year so I plan on taking it, selling the VTX1300 and seeing how close I get to buying a Electra Glide Classic (might have to put a little more than $10K into the deal). This will be my first Harley and look forward to it. If I want to get a 2006 model, should I put a downpayment down on one to pickup around October, or just wait until then? With Harleys do most dealers stay around MSRP? Thanks for the info! I'll be riding the VTX until October then I'll join you completely. Until then I'll hopefully be a watcher and contributor to the board.
Welcome to the forum. It would have been a crisis to me to have owned a Goldwing, but to each, their own. To answer your questions, dealers sell at both above MSRP and at MSRP, dont expect to buy below. As for the 2006 model, I think they begin to release them in August. You could put a deposit on one, but chances are you should be able to find that model without a big hassle. Enjoy!!!
Welcome to the forum, and to the world of Harley. You will have fun.
As far as dealers and MSRP, here is my take. Most dealers will not drop much below MSRP, but they will give discounts on acessories, clothes, etc. Some dealers think it is still 1995, and try to get 1,000 to 2,500 dollars above MSRP for their bikes. DO NOT pay it. There are too many dealers that are at MSRP. You might have to travel a little to get it, but I can go a long way for 2,500 dollars.
As I say, I haven't seen many traditional new Harley's at much below MSRP, but I noticed at our dealership the other day that they have a 1,000 discount on V-Rods. By the time you are ready, that might be the case with other models. Also, you might find a 2004 or 2005 that hasn't sold, and that might get you a better deal.
As for the Electra Glide Classic, I just went to one from a RoadKing, and couldn't be happier.
Welcome to the forum, we all know what it's like to wait for our first Harley.
With regards to you question, I agree with everything that Bill told you. In answer to you questions about ordering an '06 now vice waiting...talk to your dealer and get the skinny as the time draws closer. He may have one coming in, or you may have to order it. You'll have to wait and see. Obviously, the more particular you are in add ons from the factory, the longer you may have to wait...
You will find and get a lot of useful knowledge here. There's a great group here. BTW: I too was on the dark side...ok DARKER side and moved from a Jap Bike. Now I'm ready to slow down and enjoy the ride.
Stephen, welcome to the bb. Hopefully things work out the way you plan. That's a nice bike you're looking at. Hope you stick around and share some stories.
