Thank you for the welcomes, and the input.
I intend to ride alone 95%+ of the time, including commuting when weather permits. My wife is not real excited about the idea of a bike - she just lost one guy on two wheels, and doesn't really want me to do this.
I like the way a Sportster feels and handles, and for me the power is adequate. My concern was for an occasional 2-3 hour jaunt, say to the Poconos, with my wife. Perhaps a set of aftermarket shocks would improve 2-up riding?
If you throw a Sundowner on it and adjust the preload on the shocks, you'd be fine with the Sportster if you only plan on occasional 2 up riding. If you're gonna do quite a bit of two up riding but like the look of the sporty, you may want to go with a 1200 instead of an 883 or a bigger bike all together. From onefather to another, I am truly sorry for your loss. God bless you and your family.
Welcome, sorry about your loss, the Sportster is not the best choice for two-up riding, but if that's what you want,go for it. Good luck on your choice.

I bought my first Harley a few months ago, about a year after my wife died. It has helped bring me out of that funk. Sorry to hear about your son......I lost mine too at 17.......that was 15 years ago.......took a long time.....still miss him but it's easier now. The loss of my wife is still a bit fresh....
