hello everyone. i dont have a bike yet, but i will be gettin one next week. im a mopar guy looking for a bike for better fuel mileage.
i got my eye on a 02 sportster 883r or an 06 sportster 883. undecided on what one to get. the 02 will be lower payments and i like the looks of the "R" styling vs. a base 883. is there much of a difference in an 06 and 02?
Welcome to the forum from North Florida. Yep ! There is a difference. the newer sporty has the rubber mounted engine...smooooother than the older sporty. Both are great rides. BUT I am biased, I have owned the 883 newer model and now ride an 06 1200 custom. Happy Hunting for your scooter ! RIde safe, ride smart !
parts and acessory wise, is things interchangleable on em? couldnt u put rubber mounts on the 02 engine? i want to get different exhaust like the V & H shortshot staggered pipes but they say they only fit 04 on up, will they fit an 02?
Most all of the 04-06 parts are interchangeable within that time span, it is my understanding HD made major changes in 04 and each year after that made some changes, even changin the type of gears used in the trannies. Do not know about retro-fitting rubber mounts to older Sporties. Check the tech forums here. Try doing a search and use the keywords to find the info. Good luck !

Welcome!! Glad you found the forum. Many, maybe even most, of the parts are NOT interchangeable. Everything is listed as '03 and before or '04 and after. I've got an '04, and looking at items to change, some of the stuff I liked is not even available in the new config yet. As a fairly minor for instance, '03 clutch and brake levers will not fit on '04 and up bikes. That's the case all the way through, lot's of little unexpected changes between the model years. There were some engine mods as well, so powerplant items are very year specific across that gap. I'm not sure about the specific pipes you're talking about, but V&H does have '03 and earlier pipes in most of their models. Rubber mounting an '03 or before bike would be...a large job. Requiring a frame mod I suspect, if it's even realistically possible. If you're gonna scoot around town and the like, the '02 would be a grand ride, and lots of aftermarket parts are available to tailor to your tastes. The issues people have with the older Sportys are often reflective of the vibration, and you may not want to ride it for long periods because of this. That being said, there're guys that ride the rubber off the tires without a complaint.
In the balance, if you really dig the 883R, even if you get the '06, you're going to find yourself buying things to bring it in line with the look you want. Consider the type of riding you want to do, then poke your head over into the Sportster sub-forum and ask questions. Lotta guys there with loads of experience on both sides of the gap.
