Another forum newbie here needin some ideas!! But first, I have been riding for over 27 years. I have a 71 FLH, 85 FXWG, 89 FXSTC, and a 07 FLHRS. Had a few others but kinda stuck on these for now.... I have worked on all my HD's from day one and now have a very unique problem with my 89 softail.
While riding to my brothers celebration of life ceremony last July, I noticed a higher than normal oil consumpion problem. Like a quart in 500 miles!! I wouldn't be alarmed if it were my old pan, but this is unbelievable!! I'lost' 2 1/2 quarts in that 1800 mile trip. I found it in the primary!!
I changed the engine main seal as soon as I got back. The old one seemed OK. There is no extra vibration like if the crank bearings were going. It isn't puking oil on the ground. No unusual noises. Just filling up the primary with engine oil. Not tranny oil....
The bike only has 34,200 easy miles on it. The engineand drive trainis stock. I am **** about regular maintenance/oil changes. So, there is no abuse on the engine and I know what I am doing when working on my HD's. ( Was a wrench at a dealership2 1/2 yrs).....But now this isn't anything I have ever seen before and I am fresh outta ideas!!
