Hello people, I'd like to ask for your opinions although I'm sure everyone will be biased towards their own current ride.
My confusion lies in the number of choices available in picking a Harley, and whether a soft tail is preferable to a dyna.
I'm a 59 year young retired cop, approx 5'8" and 185, if this will have a bearing on my choices. In this town we do have HD dealerships, but no rentals, so I can't simply go and test ride different bikes. My background has been metric back to the mid 60's, but I can't get past the feeling that I'm missing out when I see the following that HD has.

The Motor Co. makes something for everyone. My purchases didn't require any deliberating - I bought the bikes that made my heart race. If you aren't so easily swayed by impulse - then let us know what kind of riding you have in mind. Day cruises around the city? Weekend touring journeys? Will you be carrying a passenger? Do you need to bring a lot of stuff? They make Dynas and Softies that'll do both jobs well - but obviously some are better at certain duties than others.
I couldn't settle on one machine to do it all - so I own two.
I will be real honest with you. I have found that the Softail Heritage is a great bike for someone like you. A little on the "short" side and not much experience with Harleys. It sits low, handles well, has a great ride and comes with saddlebags and a windshield. I could have told you a "Roadglide" like mine but I think you would really like the Softail.
Just start out with the HD website, start looking at and comparing bikes, something will catch your eye. Go to a dealership with a large selection of bikes and your choice should be comfirmed...a new STREET GLIDE for Xmas. How easy is that?

Thanks in advance, Hank
Welcome,to the forum Hank. Looks like you may have already narrowed it down to a Dyna or a Soft tail. Both are good choices. They can be equipped with most anything you'll need. However, I must warn you, you'll always want the one the other guy has. Have fun picking your new bike.
I will echo what pilot said...."Ride em all and make a decision." I found that was best for me. Everyone can give you opinions but put your butt in the seat and see what YOUR opinion is! By the way, WELCOME to the forum!!!!!
Hey Hank, welcome to the forum from another flat foot. I own the heritage classic and it really works for me. It has a lower center which makes it really easy to balance. I think any of the softails would work well. Good luck on the purchase and send it pics afterward.

Welcome from Louisiana - Glad you found the forum, a lot of great people and a lot of advise. I'm like pilot1996 - Test ride as many as you can. My first Harley was a 02 Dyna Super Glide then I moved up to an 05 Road King Classic. These babies cost to much to be buying one and you don't even know if you will like it. You might get in touch with several dealership and see if they have Demo's or spend a week end where they do have rentals. Main thing is get one that "fits" you not someone else.
Welcome to the forum, Hank! I agree with the posts above and would also advise test-riding the bikes before you purchase, even if you can't rent one for a day. At least you'll have some idea of the ride and handling of the bikes. They're all great bikes, so you can't go wrong.
