Been looking around for some tech blogs to see if I want to change my transmission sprocket and happened on this forum. Thought it might be a good resource.
Only been riding about 12 years but been working more than I ride and about to reverse that. I had a 76 Superglide in the early 80s buthave had a 98 Roadking for the last nine years. My RoadKing only has 22,000. Also pertinent: I am a klutzes of a mechanic so have most of my work done. Still,I don't want to be an idiot along with being a klutzes so I try to read some of the crankheads out here in cyberland and learn what I can.
Most recently the shift lever on my transmission shaft started getting wobbly on the spines so I read up. FoundI have to have the inner primary pulled in order to replace the lever(which I could see plain enough since there is no room to slip it off the shaft). So, started dreaming of another gear and wondering if a six speed transmission was feasible with my 98, since I was already tearing into it so much for so little.
I got sticker shock right away in looking at the cost ofreplacing the tranny sostarted looking for cheaper means to lower RPMs at Interstate speeds. Have fastened onswappingthe stock 32 tooth transmission sprocket for a 34T while they have it open and just want to know if there are drawbacks to that approach.
New bike is out of the question and something like a Baker is too much for my wallet so interested in all options other than those two.
Welcome from Houston, TX! I suggest you do some research on the net as to various other gear ratios, year model trans. internals, overall gearing changes possible at the primary or final drive. Get a target RPM in mind that you want at a particular speed, then figure how to get there most affordably. Get a shop manual, read it, buy some tools, ask for help til you get understand what to do to get the result you are looking for. Good Luck!
