I'm a newbie to this forum, but know how you feel. I've ridden metric and British bikes since 66 but had a dry spell from 1990 to 2000 (kids, mortgage, business). When I decided to get a new bike, I thought THIS is the time I shoud try a Harley and bought a 2000 Electra Glide Classic. I was reluctant because when I rode my '85, and then '88 Gold Wings, on long trips it seemed the only riders I would meet broke down on the side of the road were............Harley riders!!!! Nevertheless, I bought the bike and for awhile I was unsure if I had done the right thing. After a couple of months, I took a long trip from Vancouver, BC to San Diego, Ca. almost entirely along the coast highway (#'s 1 and 101). The bike performed flawlessly, was comfortable (especially after I added the backrest in San Diego), and was just a lot of.............FUN!!! Basically, I found out how much fun a Harley was, how reliable they are, and NO ALICE!.....they don't drip oil! Harley people are overwhelmingly friendly and helpful.
BUY A HARLEY AND YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!!! I'm having a riot on my '04 Road Glide.
Welcome from Oklahoma! My Heritage Classic is 7 months old, has almost 14k miles, not a squeak or belch. Food for thought: you might want to consider a touring machine or at least something that has floorboards and/or bags of some kind if you plan to do the riding you describe. However, I admit I'm an old geezer, like bags for storage and have never ridden a DWG or any other Dyna.

'87 FLST 110,000+ miles in ~4 years and I'm out of the military!

[sm=americanasmiley.gif]Welcome from Louisiana. Your first right move was joining the forum and your second right move will be to buy a Harley. I was in your place not too long ago, my first Harley 02 super dyna Glide, not one minute problem. since I have upgraded in my opioion for more comfort to an 05 Road Kind Classic, not a minute problem. We all realize there are lemons, if you buy used be sure and have a HD dealership go over it,if possible, before you buy or someone that knows the mechanics. Go to a dealership and test drive a demo or rent on for a week end especially the one that you re considering. Make sure the bike fits you.
Welcome from Rhode Island. The new bikes are very reliable. The only problems I have encountered is I broke down on my 86 Low Rider when something let loose in the tranny. The only time my dresser had a problem was when it was hit head on by an idiot in a car. After being totalled....it still started right up!!!!!
Like everyone else said, Harleys ARE reliable! the "harleys aren't reliable" phrase is just a myth leftover from the 70's. You will absolutely love your new Dyna and will have no regrets. It is an awesome machine and a pleasure to ride.

Southpaw Super Glide: A Left-Hand-Drive 1979 Harley FXE Built to Fit the Rider
Hi and welcome to the forum. I have been riding since 1972 and have owned several different makes and models. I had the same impression and was skeptical about buying a Harley at first. Then, I decided to buy one since so many of my friends owned them. That was many years ago and here I am (5) Harleys later. No problems with any of them. We ride long distance also for several days at a time including a trip to Sturgis in 2001 and west to Wyoming. We rode 5,000+ miles in 10 days with no problems. I wouldn't consider owning any bike other than a Harley.
Buy it, enjoy it you won't be sorry. Good luck.
