I'm thinking of buying my first Harley. Someone has an 83 XLX Sportster 1000 for sale for 3200. The bike has about thirty thousand miles on it. It looks straight. Not too shiny and pretty. What do you guys think? Should I buy it? What should I look for or listen for in particular before I part with my dead presidents?
Hi and a big welcome to the HDForum from New Zealand, enjoy!! [sm=welcomesign.gif]
Sorry but I can't help being way across the other side of the world. My only comment is to take a good look around, make sure you understand the local prices for used scoots, take a test drive and if you like it - let the mothballs out of your wallet.
Good luck with your hunt, hope you bag a nice one.

Welcome, I tend to agree with Brent. Don't buy the first Harley you see, look around and who knows, for a bit more extra cash you may end with something more suitable.
I don't know about the rest of the country but the Midwest used Harley market is flooded with 1-5 year old bikes. I recently had the chance to get a new (10 miles) 2006 1200C from a guy on ebay for $9,000 after he won it at a raffle. I would look around quite a bit before I bought unless you KNOW the bike is pristine. Then you may wish to have an experienced Harley mechanic look the bike over before you close the deal....JMO........good luck!
