As the song goes... Do what you gotta do.
OK so the softail aint the best handling Harley. Just ride it with respect for what it can do.

Hello and welcome to the forums. My bike weighs a little over 700 lbs. and I don't notice it at all. But each of my bikes over the years has been bigger than the last. You'll have to be the judge of what you can handle since you'll be riding it. Good luck.

I just bought my first bike (Softtail) this summer, no riding experience at all. I'm glad I started with this bike and not the smaller bike that some had suggested.......But thats just me!

Convincing arguments on both sides. My general take is to start on a used Rebel, or the like, so if you do drop it, etc the cost is minimal. But, only you can be the judge of your riding ability. Take the course, then start making big decisions. My $.02

I think you should go for the bike that you really want like the Soft tail. Take your course, practice a ton and always respect your bike and the road. And take your time and pay attention! It sounds so easy but the mind does wounder even with your life in your hands. When you keep it together there's nothing better than ridding! (well maybe one thing)

Buy the Softail then you won't have to upgrade later.

Take a safety course & buy a Harley that fit's you ! Many of these member's have started with a big cc bike,so don't sweat it. My first was a +1300 cc harley also.took my time and learned to from my friends.
