Go on, buy the bigtwin, it's silly to first buy all kind of small bikes when you just want the big one. Don't go loosing your money on bikes you do not love. Better invest it in the love of your life (bike wise that is ).
My first one was a hd wla fom 1942. I wish I still had that one. But I am riding a Fatboy now.
I was always told to ride like you were invisible to other drivers that concept really works also. I found a website that has 15 Riding-In-Traffic Tips. I hope this is a web site you find it helpfull, I sure did it's www.motorcyclistonline.com. Go to site then to the "How To" Tab then down on the left hand side of the page you will see 15 Riding-In-Traffic Tips click it and there is the very interesting article.

Softail should be fine for you. I agree with the earlier comment that the MSF course or some Basic Riding course is a good idea. I took the MSF one, and highly recommend it.
