Dave, What dealer are you working with? Sounds like the bike I traded in. Jake and Elwood Blue by chance? The pipes have a good sound when riding not too loud but noticeable. Welcome from Ohio.
That Sportster sounds like a good deal do me. New they go for $9800 MSRP and considering you've go the 7 year extended warranty, that offsets some of the depreciation. I think the extended warranty itself is like $1500. So looking strictly at those two items and not counting any extra parts, a new one with the warranty would be $11300. So essentially, it's $3000 off of a two year old bike with less than 3000 miles.
They won't overheat at a light, unless you do extensive stop and go driving in the city. Since it's air cooled, you have to be able to maintain a steady speed if you want it to cool off. You can do all your own maintenance on any vehicle, protected by law. Just be sure to either keep your receipts or have your owner's manual signed by the parts guy whenever you buy oil (I don't actually know anyone who has done this). As long as your receipts for oil line up with the expected service intervals, the MoCo will have to honor the warranty.
The one thing that can void your warranty would be aftermarket parts installation. If you do that yourself, and a problem arises the MoCo can contest that the aftermarket part caused the problem. If you have the dealer do the installs and they state they will honor the warranty, that means the dealer itself is taking responsibility and will mediate with the MoCo.
