Welcome from Falls Church, VA!
This is a very common problem and one I just had corrected. The symptoms are intermittent speedo reading - then a total loss. The odometer stops working and the turn signals won't cancel automatically. The lights all work OK.
The problem is the speed pickup sensor. It collects metal filings after many miles. Most people have not had luck with cleaning them. The cost for the part is around $60 I think. The hardest part is getting the connector plugged in. It is just in front of the rear fender behind the battery wall. I ended up having the shop do it for me. It is a quick fix.
