G'day brothers, Brown from Hdforums.com.au here.
Ive got a question, any assistance would be really appreciated.
A few of us boys are heading up to ride the great states next year. I was planning on buying a bagger when i land, just trying to get my head around this registration situation. Does anyone know if i can Register a bike in the states for a few months being an Aussie? With no physical address in the states im not having much luck with your "DMV" and also there was something about Insurance, is this bike insurance/medical insurance ? Could anyone recommend a company that does temporary insurance?
Cheers boys

G'Day Mate, where abouts in BrisVegas you from? Used to live in Red Hill B4 coming to Colorado 9 years ago. To answer your question, and I can only talk for Colorado, you cannot register a motor vehicle without current insurance. That said, I doubt you will get any insurance companies to insure you as you are not a "permanent resident alien" or a US citizen. If you could get insurance, it would be bloody expensive. From my experience, I had a perfect insurance rating back in Oz but it means jack over here. If you do not have US based insurance or credit history you have NO history. Therefore, if you could even get insurance, it would be mega $$$. For example, I bought a used 2000 Chevrolet Suburban (as common as a Commodore) and the best rate I could get was $500/month! After 3 months I was able to reduce it to a much lower rate.
That was 9 years ago, might be different now. Anyone on the aussie forum done what you want to do? They would be a better source than the yanks on here.
Have any M8's in the states that would let you buy/insure it under their name, then "sell it to you" (on paper)when you are ready to leave? Or if you want to buy it, and leave it, I'll meet you there and ride it home when you fly back<grin>
Here's my "past" experience----I used to buy cars in the US, carried a Canadian plate and a copy of my insurance for the vehicle the plate belonged to.
Now, back in the day in Alberta Canada you had 14 days grace before registering a new vehicle, I have often driven for months with a vehicle unregistered to the plate---although contacted my insurer in Canada at time of purchase and got the vehicle insured--
Do not know if this works for bikes------BUT a drivers license can be obtained with a US address, you must surrender your current one, exchange it when you get home----creative thinkling is required!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT!!!!!!!! Get a continental drivers drivers licence and you should be able to get temp insurance while in the US
